A native Baltimorean, Eljay, whose pen name is “Elijah”, regards himself a self-taught artist even though he attended the highly respected Maryland Institute of Art for a short time. Eljay has been hailed as “God-Gifted” by many and revered as a talented “shining light” amongst contemporary artists. Themes of inspiration and jazz are prevalent messages throughout Eljay’s work. His preferred mediums are oil & acrylic and pen & pencil—both strikingly dramatic and highly expressive in their own right. Furthermore, Eljay “Elijah” use of shadow and light is clearly apparent in his style. One of Eljay’s strongest and most popular pieces is “Annie”, an acrylic painting of a young African-American girl that personifies an emotional desire for love and compassion. Also, through his artistic evolution came “Born Again”, a powerful oil painting of a most unique version of a mother and child. Both pieces are favorites among art enthusiasts and collectors. Eljay’s art is shown throughout the world. His piece “Sang Along” is featured as part of Richard Gere’s art collection in the movie, Runaway Bride, which co-stars Julia Roberts and Gere. Eljay’s work can also be found in many distinguished collections, including those of Sugar Ray Leonard, Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and Anita Baker. In addition to his art, Eljay is passionate about supporting non-profit organizations that positively uplift and transform the lives of young men and women. Because of this other “passion”, Eljay lends his talent to produce commemorative posters and other works specifically for fundraisers and special events. A dedicated and loving father, Eljay still resides in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland continuingly giving back to the city he loves.
