About

(continued... ) Shortly after my encounter with Grendel, the hall was attacked once again, this time by Grendel’s mother. Hrothgar offered me more treasure to fight the demon. However, I chose to face her mainly to honor the heroic code. This time I did not wait for the monster to come to me, I went to it. Grendel’s mother lived in a lake infested with sea-monsters and other dangerous creatures. I got to the lake, put on my armor, and dove in. I was immediately attacked by the sea-creatures and was forced to defend myself against their constant attacks. Finally I reached Grendel’s mother. She would not be as easy to defeat as her son. I was forced to use weapons against her, but as I drew my sword, it melted in the water. I was then forced in to brutal hand to hand combat. I would have certainly been killed if it wasn’t for a sword I found lying at the bottom of the lake. I used this weapon to slay to monster. I returned to Heorot and was rewarded with more treasure from Hrothgar. After achieving my glory in the land of the Danes I decided to return home. Upon my return I was greeted with even more treasure and land from Hygelac. Several years later I ascended to the throne and became king. I ruled the land for fifty years. During the fiftieth year of my rule the land was attacked by a dragon. This dragon had been guarding a treasure and was awoken by a slave who had stolen a piece of it. I new I had to protect my people and slay the dragon, and with the death of the dragon new treasure could be acquired. So I went to its lair to confront it. The dragon attacked and we began to fight. The battle was difficult and hard fought, and in the end I killed the dragon, but not before it managed to sink a fatal bite into my skin. As I lay dying, I asked to have a portion of the treasure brought to me. Wiglaf, my loyal Geat, brought me a piece of and I was able to see the accomplishment and glory I had received before I died.

When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulkwark." ------------------------- The Heroic Code-------------------- ABOUT ME:I am Beowulf! I was born to Ecgtheow, and I am the nephew of Hygelac, king of all the Geats. I grew up to become a powerful warrior. My amazing larger-than-life strength and reputation on the battlefield quickly came to be known by all. I have always been one to seek out and achieve glory. My life has always been led by the heroic code, which is the belief that everyone will eventually die and for this reason one must try to achieve as much glory in their life as they possibly can. Following this code has led me on many adventures. The first of these adventures came when I heard of a demon named Grendel attacking the great mead hall, Heorot, in the land of Hrothgar. Grendel had terrorized the hall for years. Many had tried, and failed, to defeat him. It was said that no man had ever last more than a single night with the monster. Upon hearing this, I immediately gathered several of my men and set out for the land of the Danes to destroy the monster. We traveled fast and made the journey in just one day. When we arrived we were welcomed and escorted to Heorot. Hrothgar promised me all the treasure I could want in return for me killing Grendel. That night my men and I spent the night in Heorot. I stayed awake throughout the night awaiting the monster. I had neither armor, nor weapons to fight him because he did not use these. Then late in the night he finally came. I watched as he snuck in and attacked one of my men. Next he came to me; however, I was ready for his attack. He grabbed for me, but I stopped his reach. I could see the fear in his eyes as I grabbed him, realizing that his strength had never been matched before. We fought and fought, and in the end in ripped the beast’s arm clean off. Unfortunately I could not kill him right then and there as he managed to slip away. He would now die on his own. The next morning I was greeted with praise from all the people. Hrothgar rewarded me with numerous treasures and it seemed all was fine once again in the land of the Danes. "
