About

The Mythic Path of Parenthood Mothering has taught me more about letting go, being in the moment, unconditional love, grace, wisdom, joy, patience, and sacrifice than yoga, Buddhist meditation, Sufi dancing, Christian prayer, and psychotherapy combined. Those techniques helped me immeasurably, but if I had to choose only one method for enlightenment, it would be parenting. If the goal of spiritual practice is to wake up fully in each moment with gratitude and hope and eternal liveliness, then parenting can get you there every day if you choose to commit fully and honestly to the job. Parents practice walking the fine line between control and freedom, will and surrender, self-respect and respect for others. And we get excellent feedback from the most demanding of masters – our own kids – whose specialty is in teaching us how to keep on loving even when we are tired, scared, confused, or upset. Isn’t that what every seeker is after? -EL Elizabeth Lesser is the cofounder of Omega Institute, the nation’s largest holistic education and retreat center, in Rhinebeck, New York. She is the author of The Seeker’s Guide: Making Your Life a Spiritual Adventure….
