NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATIVE WOMEN CAUCUS UPDATE DECEMBER, 2009 Ellen Young 2006-2008/Assembly D-Queens County Trailblazer Assemblywoman Ellen Young, 22nd AD, Flushing, made legislative history as the first Asian-American woman elected to a Legislative office on the East Coast, and the first Asian-American lawmaker to introduce bills that were signed into State Law. Ms Young also served as the first Asian-American Speaker Pro Tempore in the NYS Assembly, and served on the Assembly Committees on Aging, Housing, Economic Development, Job Creation, and Commerce, Corporations, Authorities and Commissions, Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and Libraries. She was appointed Chair of a Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in June 2008 and was featured by the State Capitol film team for its "Women in Legislation" documentary. As a young Taiwanese immigrant arriving in the United States 32 years ago without resources, Ellen immediately fell in love with the endless possibilities of America and has dedicated her public service career to helping families achieve their American Dreams as well. A single mother and domestic violence survivor, Ellen believes education is the key to overcoming cultural roadblocks, and continues to work tirelessly for the elderly and the underprivileged. In her public service career, she has served as the President of the Chinese American Voters Association, the Friends of Queens Library, the Vice Chair of the Flushing Asian Lunar New Year Celebration Committee and the Vice President of the Central Queens Regular Democratic Club. She has also served as a Board Member on the Queens District Attorney’s Advisory Council, the Queens Borough President’s Advisory Committee and the New York Police Department’s Advisory Council. Ms Young co-founded the Chinese-American Women’s Association, the Parents Association, the Voters Association, and was named as the first female Asian NYPD Auxiliary Police Officer in Queens. A staunch environmentalist, Assemblywoman Young's political life was abruptly redirected when, while visiting constituents on her bicycle in July 2008, she was hit by a car and seriously injured. Determined to continue her life's work, she enrolled as a Graduate student of St. John's University, Institute of Asian Studies and continues to advocate for human rights, environmental conservation and the prevention of domestic violence, while serving as President of the New York State Chinese Auxiliary Police Association.
