I have been working directly and indirectly with individuals with mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse issues for over ten years. I began working with troubled youth directly upon graduating high school in 1994 as a residential counselor at Beaumont Correctional Center located in Powhatan VA. My duties included maintaining control of the youth movements, and holding group awareness meetings within individual cottages. Youth were assigned to my home cottage Spradlin when they were received from our reception and diagnostic center in Chesterfield at Bon Air RDC. I received credit hours for my numerous schools and in-service training I attended while employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia. I applied and was hired by Charlottesville Police Department as a Community Service Officer (CSO) in 1996. My duties included working with individuals within the city’s impoverished housing project areas. I was assigned to patrol and formulate community forums to address community issues concerning crime, substance abuse, and developing programs aimed at steering kids to attend community programs and activities. I also taught Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) at Beauford Middle School as a school resource officer. I took a position as a deputy sheriff in Fluvanna county in part to further my education in the field of criminal justice. Upon graduation from Central Shenadoah Criminal Justice Training Center, I attended numerous classes and in-service sessions. I attended leadership seminars which in part, led to my promotion to Sergeant. I have had very extensive training in arms, self defense, and non-lethal hand to hand restraint techniques. I am currently a certified ASP baton instructor. I also graduated from the Virginia Corrections Academy. I feel as though my experience working as a counselor with Region Ten CSB coupled with my past jobs qualifies me for this position. I received certification in both CPR and First Aid at all of my past employments. I was hired as a residential counselor. My duties included in home intensive care in a group living center at Orchard House in Crozet, VA. My position soon changed to one on one intensive in home care with a mentally challenged mildly atheistic individual. This required me to keep daily logs on the individual, manage funds appropriated for trips and activities, monitor family interactions with this particular individual and make recommendations for future treatment plans.
